Mistura 2013, Magdelena del Mar, Lima

Day one was certainly a success. After our lovely morning about town, we got to do something we haven't done in ages- took an afternoon nap. Traveling to a new country, on a continent that you haven't been be for, can be exhausting, you know. Especially when you have as active imagination as I do!

We found out yesterday that we happened upon Lima during one of the best weeks of the year: the week of Mistura, Lima's most important food festival. Jackpot!  In short, it's a gigantic food festival separated into "mundos" featuring regional culinary treasures (http://www.peruthisweek.com/food-everything-you-need-to-know-about-mistura-2013-100774). There is a Mundo del Sandueches (World of Sandwiches) and a Mundo del CafĂ© (um, AMAZING), but there is also a Mundo del Adino (the Andes) and Mundo del Amazonica  (the Amazon). There is a world of food particular to Lima, and one specializing in skewers. BBQ had it's own whole section, which basically smelled like paradise. However, there was one section that stood out as the man among men, and had hour long lines to prove it- Mundo del Ceviche. Ceviche is a popular dish down here, and something Jeff and I have been looking forward to. We both have an incredible soft spot for fish and lime juice. So, when tackling this "mundo" our strategy was simple: choose the line with the most Peruvians and get in it. It was well worth the hour spent, let me tell you. Here are a few snapshots of our day there:

All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and the people of Peru are lovely. I also know way more Spanish than I give myself credit for. That's all to report for now.

Ciao!
